National Scholarships and Fellowships

As a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing chemical-science research and collaboration, the ACS supports recent graduates and graduate students interested in becoming high school chemistry teachers through the ACS-Hach Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Scholarship. The scholarship provides a $6,000 stipend towards the completion of a master's degree in education or secondary chemistry/science certification, as well as support and mentoring throughout the recipient’s three-year teaching commitment.

The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) provides several scholarships to support the undergraduate and doctoral studies of women in a variety of STEM fields. Successful applications demonstrate clear career goals and well-roundedness. Some scholarships require AWIS membership

The ACFEA is a professional association that aims to strengthen global security while also preparing tomorrow’s STEM workforce. The ACFEA STEM Majors Scholarships provide students with funding through several different scholarships, such as the STEM Major Scholarship for $2,500 or the Cyber Security Scholarship for $5,000. Candidates demonstrate academic achievement and leadership experience.

The STEM Teachers Scholarship presented by the AFCEA grants scholarships to students pursuing a graduate degree or credential/licensure in order to teach STEM subjects in K-12 schools. Awards total $2,500.

The American Water Works Association provides various merit-based scholarships for outstanding undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral conducting research in the water field. Research focus areas can range from water treatment to climate change to public health.

The Barbara Lotze Scholarship presented by the American Association of Physics Teachers offers a $3,000 stipend to students training to become high school physics teachers. Successful candidates demonstrate academic excellence and present a course of study that prepares them towards a career in physics secondary education.

BTI is a state-of-the-art research facility in Ithaca, NY that investigates plant and life sciences to improve food security, agricultural sustainability, and human health. As a summer intern in the BTI Summer Research Experience Program, students conduct fully funded research on bioinformatics, plant genomes, or programmable plant systems research in a hands-on and collaborative environment. Programs run for 10 weeks between June and August, and students receive a stipend, a meal and travel allowance, and complimentary on-campus housing. Applicants are asked to share relevant research experience and how BTI’s programming and faculty fits with the student’s interests.

The Department of Energy’s Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) supports incoming and first year graduate students to pursue a PhD in a field related to computational science. Candidates can apply either to the Science & Engineering track or Math/Computer science track based on the relevance of their focus area. The DOE CSGF provide adequate funding to cover all the costs of graduate school granted that the fellow continues to meet the eligibility requirements.

The American Heart Association Scholars Program aims to expand the future of health care by preparing today’s students to be knowledgeable and empathetic community leaders. During a 16-week program during the academic year, AHA Scholars learn from expert mentors, conduct scientific research, and participate in community engagement projects. Candidates demonstrate a commitment to community work through volunteering and aim to fight disparities in health care.

The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to $9,500 per year) for two years of full-time study and a 10-week, full-time paid ($700/week) internship at a NOAA facility during the summer.

The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the scholars with hands-on, practical experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory NOAA Scholarship Program orientation and the annual Science & Education Symposium, scientific conferences where students present their research, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.

The Agricultural Advancement Scholarship helps students launch their career in the agriculture industry by providing an up to $10,000 renewable scholarship to students. Candidates can represent a variety of agriculture-related fields such as food science, veterinary medicine, or agriculture finance.

The Foreign Affairs IT Fellowship is an opportunity to use your IT based skills to make a difference, see the world, and experience different cultures. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, this two-year Fellowship program is a path to a career in the Foreign Service by providing academic funding for an IT-related degree, internships, professional development, and mentorship – culminating in an appointment in the Foreign Service as an Information Management Specialist (IMS).

The Generation Google Scholarship supports the success of aspiring computer scientists through a grant and summer networking opportunities. Grantees win a $10,000 scholarship and participate in the Google Scholars’ Retreat, where students can meet Google engineers and other top students from around the US and Canada. Candidates demonstrate leadership experience, an excellent academic record, and a passion for computer science and technology. Students must also be from an underrepresented group in computer science.

Great Minds in STEM (GMiS) is an organization that implements innovative programs to inspire and support students at various points in their academics to pursue careers in STEM. As part of this mission, the GMiS STEM Scholarship provides various merit-based scholarships between $500-$5,000, as well as various non-merit-based scholarships. GMiS scholars also receive complimentary registration for that year’s GMiS Conference. Candidates demonstrate academic achievement and significant leadership or service experience

By providing Goldwater Scholarships to college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering, the Goldwater Foundation is helping ensure that the U.S. is producing the number of highly-qualified professionals the nation needs in these critical fields. Apply as college sophomores and juniors. There is a $7,500 scholarship opportunity for undergraduates. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Students will typically begin working with the campus committee in early fall to receive a nomination.

The Hertz Fellowship provides financial and lifelong professional support for the nation’s most promising graduate students in science and technology.

The fellowship includes up to five years of funding, valued at up to $250,000, and the freedom to pursue innovative projects wherever they may lead. In addition, fellows take part in ongoing mentoring, symposia, and workshops with our vibrant community of more than 1200 fellows, a set of peers who span disciplines, generations, and geography.

The Gilliam Fellows Program offers a joint fellowship for PhD and their faculty thesis advisors to support ambitious science research and inclusive environment. Fellows receive up to three years of stipend support and participate in professional development programs. PhD Fellows are also eligible to apply to four additional years of support as a Gilliam Postdoc Fellow in order to facilitate the transition from student to independent academic researcher.

The J-Squared Project is an immersive training program for students pursuing a licensure to teach secondary mathematics at Boston University. J-Squared scholars are trained to teach mathematics while simultaneously raising their students’ consciousness about social justice. Scholars receive full tuition, participate in workshops and seminars, and learn from mentors. Successful completion of scholars’ certification program is followed by a commitment to work for two years in a high-need district.

The Leo W. and Alberta V. Thomas Utz Scholarship – Math presented by the Daughters of the American Revolution grants students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a natural science field (e.g. biology, chemistry, physics, or earth science) with a $4,000 yearly renewable scholarship.

The NDSEG Fellowship is a 3-year federal program that helps fellows further their graduate education in the disciplines of military importance as listed under DoD’s Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) in research development. The fellowship covers full tuition, health insurance costs, and provides a monthly stipend of $3,600. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their research proposal and its relevance to one of the BAAs, their academic experience and accomplishments, and a personal statement.

The purpose of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship  is to ensure the quality, vitality and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program seeks to broaden participation in science and engineering of underrepresented groups, including women, minorities, persons with disabilities, and veterans. The five-year fellowship provides three years of financial support inclusive of an annual stipend of $37,000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Students will typically begin working with the Office of Competitive Fellowships and Awards in the summer on their application material.

The Education & Communication Scholarship presented by the National Dairy Shrine awards students pursuing a career in dairy industry education or communication with a $2,000 scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based on leadership experience and academic achievement.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program is a highly individualized and accelerated doctoral training program for outstanding students committed to biomedical research careers. NIH Oxford-Cambridge (OxCam) students partner with two Investigators - one at the NIH and another at the University of Oxford or University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom - to perform a single, collaborative dissertation project. Since the program is based on the British system, OxCam Scholars perform doctoral research without required formal courses other than those students choose to take in relationship to their own scientific interests. As a result, OxCam students are able to complete the doctoral degree in approximately four years. Students are expected to divide the time evenly between the two laboratories, with two years in the NIH laboratory and two years in the UK laboratory.

Applications for the NIH Oxcam Program are available online between August and December. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident and possess a bachelor’s degree by the start of the program. Students selected for admission typically demonstrate a sincere passion for science through previous participation in summer, job-related, or undergraduate/post-baccalaureate research opportunities.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. The program provides up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition, educational expenses, and reasonable living expenses to scholarship recipients. Scholarships are awarded for one year and can be renewed for up to four years. In return, scholars must commit to two NIH service obligations for every year of scholarship support.

The Quad Fellowship empowers exceptional engineering, mathematics, science, and technology graduate students to advance research and innovation with a lens of positive social impact throughout their careers by providing scholarships, immersive and inspiring events, mentorship and career-advancing programming, and cross-cultural exchange opportunities.

The Quad Fellowship is operated in consultation with a non-governmental task force composed of academic, foreign policy, and private sector leaders from each Quad country. Beginning in 2024, the fellowship will be administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), a global not-for-profit organization that manages many of the world’s most prestigious scholarship and fellowship programs.

The IEEE Computer Society fuels continual technological advancement by bringing together computer sciences and engineering professionals at all stages in their careers. Through the Richard E. Merwin Student Scholarship, IEEE provides up to $1,000 in scholarships to students showing promise in their academic and professional trajectory.  Recipients also serve as IEEE Computer Society Student Ambassadors for one year. Candidates are evaluated based on their participation in IEEE activities, academic achievement, and extracurricular activities.

The Department of Defense (DoD) Scholarship-for-Service Program (SMART) is a combined educational and workforce development opportunity for STEM students. SMART offers scholarships for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students pursuing a STEM degree. Scholarship recipients receive full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed employment with the Department of Defense after graduation.

As global leaders in sustainable architecture and engineering, Stantec provides the Equity & Diversity Scholarship to support the next generation of industry leaders from historically underrepresented communities. Scholarship amounts range from $1,500-$10,000 based on specific needs articulated by applicants. Applicants will also be able to apply to additional paid internships. Candidates are considered from their educational and career goals, community service, and leadership experience.

The Synchrony Tech Scholarship support autistic adults pursuing technology-related courses or training to advance their careers. Applicants must complete courses and certifications through an accredited university or program.

  • Eligibility: Open to all autistic adults 18 years of age or older who are eligible to work in the United States, who have a documented medical or educational autism diagnosis. The selected certification program must start at least 90 days after application submission and be able to be completed within approximately 2 years of the award date.

The BD Scholarship was established by Becton, Dickinson, and Company in partnership with UNCF to provide a merit-based award to current juniors and seniors who are enrolled full-time at any UNCF member institutions, other HBCUs, or any accredited four-year college or university during the 2024-2025 academic year.

The UNCF Colgate-Palmolive X UNCF Inspire Our Future Scholars Program provides need-based scholarships and wrap-around support opportunities that include participation in an annual webinar, UNCF’s Early Talent Opportunity Program, and a UNCF Student Leadership Conference for ten (10) students beginning in their sophomore year. The Program will provide a renewable, need-based, scholarship of up to $5,000 during the 2024-2025 school year, up to $7,000 during the 2025-2026 school year, and up to $8,000 during the 2026-2027 school year.

The UNCF PSEG Foundation Scholarship is directed towards African-American students, who are incoming freshmen attending a four-year college or university within the United States within the 2024-25 Academic year. The candidates must major in one of the following academic fields: Engineering, Business, Finance, Economics, Information Technology, and Computer Technology.  

The candidates must be a permanent resident of New Jersey and Long Island, New York. In addition, the students will be eligible for scholarship if they continue to meet the program criteria and have unmet financial determined by their Financial Aid Office.

Mars Petcare US, Inc. is pleased to offer the Pursuing Academics with Support (PAWS) scholarship. This need-based scholarship will go towards supporting Black/African American students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a STEM career at any accredited, four-year, U.S. located institution. Selected scholarship recipients will receive up to $10,000.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be African American / Black and have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Science, Engineering, Technology, or Mathematics academic discipline. USRA is an independent, non-profit corporation that conducts major research in space-related science, technology, and engineering with the close collaboration of universities. Through its Distinguished Undergraduate Award program, USRA awards five scholarships to promising students showing career interest in space research, space science education, or aeronautics-related sciences. Each merit-based scholarship provides a one-time award of $5,000. Candidates are evaluated based on stated goals, relevant past accomplishments, academic achievement, and leadership experience.

Since 1988, the Women in Defense (WID) Scholar Program has provided financial awards to encourage women to pursue careers supporting U.S. national security, defense, and foreign policy. Candidates are selected based on criteria such as participation in defense and national security activities, work experience, and demonstrated financial need. Recipients are asked to speak about the impact of the scholarship at WID events or to write a short paragraph for WID publications.

International Scholarships and Fellowships

The Anna Sobol Levy Fellowship provides up to $18,000 in tuition for graduate study at Raphael Recanti International School of Reichman University near Tel Aviv. Levy Fellows must enroll for either an MA in counter-terrorism and intelligence program, an MA in diplomacy and conflict studies, or an MSc in machine learning and data science. Candidates are committed to pursuing careers in the Foreign Service or intelligence agencies. All programs are conducted in English.

We fund 18 scholarships per year, comprised of 16 Churchill Scholarships in science, mathematics, and engineering, and two Kander's Churchill Scholarships in science policy. It is for one year of master’s study (courses run between 9 and 12 months) at the University of Cambridge. The award covers tuition, roundtrip airfare to the UK, visa fees and health surcharge, and a stipend that is set 5% higher than the UK Research Council standard. Recipients are eligible to apply for a $4,000 special research grant. The total value is around $65,000.

A joint program of German Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS7) and DAAD, this program offers students a full academic semester of study abroad at one of the UAS7 universities in Germany followed by a one-semester professional internship experience in a company or research institute in Germany. Must be currently enrolled as sophomores or juniors in one of these fields – engineering, science, life sciences, business, management, economics, architecture, art, design, journalism, social work. If selected, you will receive a full tuition waiver for both semesters and are also eligible for a DAAD Scholarship or a UAS7 Travel Scholarship.

Office of Competitive Fellowships and Awards: Summer Fellowships

The Office of Competitive Fellowships and Awards at Towson University offers a summer fellowship each year that supports two students engaged in efforts to effect positive change in communities on- and off- campus, and that fosters TU student leaders working for the public good. Activities include community engagement, internships or research occurring over a 10-week period in the summer. Collaboration or partnership with an external organization is encouraged. Students are required to identify a faculty mentor for their project. The stipend for 10 weeks is $5,000. Faculty mentors will receive a stipend of $1,000.

The Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) presented by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) places students from North America, the United Kingdom, and Ireland in German universities for a unique summer research internship . Interns are matched with a host institution based on their area of interest, and for three months, they work closely with Ph.D. student mentors and researchers.

DAAD provides a monthly stipend to cover living expenses. Work will be conducted in English, and German language proficiency is not required. Candidates should demonstrate past research experience and relevant coursework.

Internships

The Microsoft Undergraduate Research Internship in computing is a 12-week summer program designed to develop students’ experiences and abilities to prepare for advanced degrees and a career in computing research. Interns conduct research in Microsoft Research Labs with the support of experts in various related fields to make important contributions to new and ongoing research. Applicants from underrepresented groups in engineering and computer science are especially encouraged to apply.

Opportunities with Nonprofit Organizations

The American Meteorological Society is pleased to announce the AMS Freshman Undergraduate Scholarship program, open to all high school students and designed to encourage study in the atmospheric and related sciences. Serving as a unique example of various sectors of our field joining together to support young, talented minds, the scholarships are being sponsored by partners in industry, as well as through named scholarships either established by an AMS member or in memory of someone. The sponsors of these scholarships have all recognized the importance of encouraging young people to enter the atmospheric and related sciences and thus have made generous contributions in support of the AMS Freshman Undergraduate Scholarship Program. The scholarship stipend is $5000, awarding $2500 each year for the freshman and sophomore years. The second-year funding is dependent on successful completion of the first year.

The AMS Fellowship Program is a source of unique opportunities for outstanding students looking to pursue graduate education in the atmospheric or related sciences. To date, 388 students have been designated as AMS fellowship recipients. The program helps these first-year graduate students to be educated about unique challenges facing the world so that they may better tackle real-world issues after graduation. Fellowships come with several benefits that include financial support, the opportunity to be special guests at the AMS Annual Meeting with exclusive events therein, and ongoing academic and career support from AMS. A stipend will be presented to each fellowship recipient for a nine-month period in the academic year. In addition, fellowship recipients will receive partial travel support to attend the AMS Annual Meeting (complimentary meeting registration, hotel, air fare). Stipend amounts vary from $5,000 to $26,000.

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is pleased to invite applications for the AMS Graduate Fellowship in the History of Science, to be awarded to a student in the process of completing a dissertation on the history of the atmospheric, or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences. The goal of the graduate fellowship is to support dissertation topics in the history of the atmospheric, or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences, and to foster close working relations between historians and scientists. An effort will be made to place the student into a mentoring relationship. The Fellowship carries a $20,000 stipend and will support one year of dissertation research. Fellowships cannot be deferred and must be used for the year awarded, but can be used to support research at a location away from the student’s institution, provided the plan is approved by the student’s thesis advisor.

The AMS Scholarship for Underserved Communities will award funding to students who have been traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, especially Hispanic, Native American, and Black/African American students. The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is committed to advancing core values of diversity, inclusion, and equity across all aspects of the atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrologic sciences.  The $6,000 two-year scholarship is for $3000 per year during freshman and sophomore years.

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) administers senior undergraduate scholarships established in memory of a loved one or to honor an individual’s contributions to the sciences. These scholarships are intended to help further the education of outstanding students who are pursuing degrees in the atmospheric and related oceanic or hydrologic sciences. Current Juniors should apply now for the school year beginning in the fall of 2025. Scholarship awards will range from $2000 to $10,000. All scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence; some have a focus appropriate to the named Honoree. In addition to the scholarship awarded, winners are invited to attend the AMS Annual Meeting with partial support (complimentary registration and hotel, no travel cost included) in their senior year.

The Women in Science Scholarship supports women in the atmospheric, oceanic, and climate sciences, and related areas of study. The scholarship was established to acknowledge that gender diversity is essential in the pursuit of better science. An all-woman committee reviews and selects the recipient of this award. The scholarship carries a $10,000 stipend. The scholarship is awarded based on academic excellence. The recipient of this scholarship is invited to attend the AMS Annual Meeting with partial support (complimentary registration, hotel, and travel cost included) in their senior year.  In addition, the awardee will be invited to serve one year as a member on the AMS Women's Committee.

The Carnegie Mellon University Rales Fellows Program empowers students from underrepresented and under resourced backgrounds, who are dubbed the Missing Millions by the National Science Foundation, through a graduate degree will increase the number of voices within STEM research, education and innovation, and help the U.S. meet the growing need for a new generation of leaders. The CMU Rales Fellows Program will directly address the Missing Millions issue through a distinctive program that provides students with full tuition, a stipend to cover living expenses such as housing and health insurance, and a holistic ecosystem of developmental and networking opportunities.

Each summer the Center for Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh (CNUP) sponsors a vibrant and diverse 10-week summer program in which selected undergraduate students from throughout the U.S. conduct neuroscience research under the guidance of individual CNUP training faculty. The Program allows qualified students to experience the challenges and rewards of intensive, hypothesis-driven laboratory research in neuroscience, and teach them the technical features of a research project. Applicants must have completed their sophomore or junior year of undergraduate training before the start of the program. A $4,000 stipend will be paid as follows.

The Father James B. Macelwane Annual Award was established by the American Meteorological Society to honor the late Rev. James B. Macelwane, S.J., a world-renowned authority of seismology, who was a geophysicist and Dean of the Institute of Technology, Saint Louis University, until his death in 1956.  The recipient of the Father James B. Macelwane award will receive a stipend of $1000 supported by member donations to the AMS Giving Program. 

This award's purpose is to stimulate interest in meteorology among college students through submitting original student papers concerned with some phase of the atmospheric sciences.  The student must be enrolled as an undergraduate at the time the paper is written, and no more than two students from any one institution may enter papers in any one contest.

Through the oSTEM Scholarship program, 15 scholarships are provided to students who are attending community college, undergraduate, or graduate institutions to pursue a degree in a STEM field and must have completed at least one semester of higher education. The award amount is up to $5000. Applicants must identify as a members of the LGBTQ+ community. The general application can be used to apply to any (and multiple) of the scholarships that we offer. Applicants must be attending an institution based in a country where oSTEM has active chapters: the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, and Mexico.

The Patti Grace Smith Fellowship is a comprehensive program tailored for Black and African American undergraduate students who want to build a career in aerospace. Whether you are interested in aviation or space; in engineering, science, business, policy, or journalism are encouraged to apply. Applicants should be US Citizens or US Permanent Residents, be Black or African-American, and be current students in a bachelor’s Degree program or any year of an associate degree program.   • The 2024-2025 Rooted In Science Scholarship Program will award need-based scholarships of up to $10,000 to African American women who are college juniors or seniors and pursuing a degree in biology, chemical engineering, chemistry, or mechanical engineering. Awards will be issued in the spring 2025 semester.

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) offers Scholarships for Hispanic graduating high school seniors and undergraduate students pursuing a degree in STEM at a community college or 4-year university. Scholar SHPE provides opportunities for students or professionals pursuing technical certificates or graduate-level professional education and graduate students pursuing a master’s or doctoral STEM degree program at an accredited university. SHPE is actively narrowing the gap in the Hispanic STEM education pipeline.

  • Eligibility: Active SHPE Member. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, with a plan to pursue a STEM degree. Applicants must plan to enroll at an accredited two-year or four-year college/university for the 2024-2025 academic year in the United States.
