The Legal Opportunity Scholarship presented by the American Bar Association grants $15,000 over three years to encourage students who share the ABA’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion complete law school.

The Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship Program presented by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) provides $2,000-$10,000 awards to students dedicated to career paths deterring fraud and white-collar crime. In addition to their scholarship, recipients also earn a full year of ACFE membership.

The Afro Scholars Law Diversity Scholarship is a program for incoming first-year law students to participate in mentorship opportunities, professional development, job fairs with top law firms, and many other opportunities while being a part of a specially-selected cohort.

The American Academy of Nursing Fellowship is an honorific society and one of the most prestigious recognitions in nursing practice, research, and policy. Academy Fellows enter community with some of nursing’s most accomplished leaders in the world. The American Academy of Nursing also provides further fellowship and research opportunities to its Fellows. Applicants must be sponsored by two current Academy Fellows.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) provides various scholarships to nursing undergraduate and graduate students that award anywhere between $1,000 to $10,000. The AACN also provides resources to other unaffiliated scholarships. Awards are generally given on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, and participation in extracurricular nursing activities.

The ABA LGBTQ+ Public Interest Scholarship Program awards $5,000 to law students or recent law school graduates studying for the Bar and who have or will work in LGBTQ+ public interest law. Applicants from all backgrounds are welcome to apply, so long as they have demonstrated a commitment to support the LGBTQ+ community. Applicants must have already secured an internship or job working with an organization doing legal or policy work that directly impacts the LGBTQ+ community.

The Buckfire & Buckfire Law School Diversity Scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship for current law school students of ethnic, racial, or other minorities who have a commitment to diversity issues in their community.

The Buckfire & Buckfire Paralegal Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship awarded to students currently enrolled in a paralegal education program who have completed at least one semester.

The Doc Dempsey Scholarship supports students pursuing helping professions with a $500 award. Care-giving professions include but are not limited to medicine, mental health, and teaching.

The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to $9,500 per year) for two years of full-time study and a 10-week, full-time paid ($700/week) internship at a NOAA facility during the summer.

The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the scholars with hands-on, practical experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory NOAA Scholarship Program orientation and the annual Science & Education Symposium, scientific conferences where students present their research, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.

The Health and Aging Policy Fellowship is an interdisciplinary opportunity for health professionals to influence the policy that provides aging Americans with the best possible quality of life. Fellows work as legislative assistants, applying their practical clinical experience into sound health policy.

The nine-to-twelve month program offers a residential track where Fellows are placed in Washington, D.C. or at a state agency, or a non-residential track with brief placements throughout the year. Stipends range up to $70,000 for residential Fellows depending on career stage and institutional support.

The Hope for Healing Scholarships encourages exceptional students to pursue careers in addiction and mental health treatment. One undergraduate student and one graduate receive the $5,000 award annually.

The Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT) Program at Philips Academy in Massachusetts is a summer program that prepares students from underserved or marginalized communities for graduate school. During the month of July, IRT Scholars study an intensive syllabus that exposes them to the rigors of graduate education. Program benefits include individualized support to clarify education and career goals, in-depth graduate program exploration and research, application coaching, and application fee waivers. Prospective scholars demonstrate a dedication to eradicating racial disparities in education and pursuing a career in teaching, counseling, or school administration.

Since 1940, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) has been committed to racial justice and equity. Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, LDF seeks structural changes to expand democracy, eliminate disparities, and achieve racial justice in a society that fulfills the promise of equality for all Americans. LDF is building on this legacy with the Marshall-Motley Scholars Program.

Named in honor of civil rights legends Thurgood Marshall — LDF’s founder and the nation’s first Black Supreme Court Justice — and Constance Baker Motley, former LDF attorney and the first Black woman to become a federal judge, the MMSP will create pathways to leadership, self-sufficiency, and socio-economic progress, while developing individuals to become ambassadors and advocates for transformational change in Black communities in the South.

This program comes at a time when Black students are facing more barriers than ever to attend law school. Studies show that the cost of a private law school education has grown by a whopping 175% since 1985. According to the American Bar Association, student loans take a disproportionate toll on lawyers of color, often forcing them to take unwanted career paths. The support offered by the MMSP is an intentional effort to address the racial and economic barriers that often deter students from pursuing their dreams of becoming civil rights attorneys, and a targeted effort to support the civil rights ecosystem in the South.

  • A full scholarship for law school tuition, and a reasonable cost of living for room, board and incidentals to alleviate the debt burden that can prevent future lawyers from pursuing a career in racial justice;
  • Summer internships at LDF and other national civil rights organizations with offices in the South to begin their trainings as civil rights lawyers early in their law school careers;
  • A two-year postgraduate fellowship focused on a racial justice practice in the South; and
  • Access to special trainings sponsored by the LDF.

The Milestone Trial LawHER Scholarship awards $10,000 to a third year, female law student who plans to become a plaintiff trial lawyer with the goal of emphasizing the importance of a client-centered approach to law.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. The program provides up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition, educational expenses, and reasonable living expenses to scholarship recipients. Scholarships are awarded for one year and can be renewed for up to four years. In return, scholars must commit to two NIH service obligations for every year of scholarship support.

The Patrick Malone & Associates Offers Scholarship awards $5,000 to law students who intend to pursue a career representing individuals in civil cases, especially those who would normally struggle to afford a lawyer.

The Essential Visionaries Fund awards undergraduate students to making a meaningful impact within K-12 school systems and healthcare fields. Recipients demonstrate leadership experience, community service, and academic excellence. Yearly scholarships range up to $10,000 and are renewable for four years.

Sunshine Behavioral Health’s Opioid Awareness Scholarship awards $500 to students in fields relating to substance abuse recovery, such as nursing and psychology. Applicants are asked to write an essay focused on the opioid epidemic in the United States.

The Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Graduate Fellowship Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by Howard University, attracts and prepares outstanding young people for Foreign Service careers in the U.S. Department of State. Upon successful completion of a two-year master's degree program and fulfillment of Foreign Service entry requirements, fellows can work as Foreign Service Officers, serving in Washington, D.C., and at a U.S. embassy, consulate or diplomatic mission around the globe. Students will receive up to $42,000 annually for a two-year period for tuition, room, board, books, and mandatory fees for completion of two-year master’s degrees. This includes up to $24,000 per year for tuition and mandatory fees and an academic year stipend of $18,000.

Since 1988, the Women in Defense (WID) Scholar Program has provided financial awards to encourage women to pursue careers supporting U.S. national security, defense, and foreign policy. Candidates are selected based on criteria such as participation in defense and national security activities, work experience, and demonstrated financial need. Recipients are asked to speak about the impact of the scholarship at WID events or to write a short paragraph for WID publications.

International Scholarships and Fellowships

The Anna Sobol Levy Fellowship provides up to $18,000 in tuition for graduate study at Raphael Recanti International School of Reichman University near Tel Aviv. Levy Fellows must enroll for either an MA in counter-terrorism and intelligence program, an MA in diplomacy and conflict studies, or an MSc in machine learning and data science. Candidates are committed to pursuing careers in the Foreign Service or intelligence agencies. All programs are conducted in English.

We fund 18 scholarships per year, comprised of 16 Churchill Scholarships in science, mathematics, and engineering, and two Kander's Churchill Scholarships in science policy. It is for one year of master’s study (courses run between 9 and 12 months) at the University of Cambridge. The award covers tuition, roundtrip airfare to the UK, visa fees and health surcharge, and a stipend that is set 5% higher than the UK Research Council standard. Recipients are eligible to apply for a $4,000 special research grant. The total value is around $65,000.

A joint program of German Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS7) and DAAD, this program offers students a full academic semester of study abroad at one of the UAS7 universities in Germany followed by a one-semester professional internship experience in a company or research institute in Germany. Must be currently enrolled as sophomores or juniors in one of these fields – engineering, science, life sciences, business, management, economics, architecture, art, design, journalism, social work. If selected, you will receive a full tuition waiver for both semesters and are also eligible for a DAAD Scholarship or a UAS7 Travel Scholarship.

Office of Competitive Fellowships and Awards: Summer Fellowships

The Office of Competitive Fellowships and Awards at Towson University offers a summer fellowship each year that supports two students engaged in efforts to effect positive change in communities on- and off- campus, and that fosters TU student leaders working for the public good. Activities include community engagement, internships or research occurring over a 10-week period in the summer. Collaboration or partnership with an external organization is encouraged. Students are required to identify a faculty mentor for their project. The stipend for 10 weeks is $5,000. Faculty mentors will receive a stipend of $1,000.

Opportunities with Nonprofit Organizations

The East-West Center offers a semester internship experience for undergraduate and graduate students and recent graduates to gain first-hand training experience at a US-Indo-Pacific research and education organization in Washington, DC. Applicants typically have a strong interest in US-Indo-Pacific relations. They may be studying international relations, Asia studies, international economics, international political economy, public policy, international business, or other similar areas of study. Full-time participation comes with a $2,000/month stipend. Stipends are prorated for part-time participation and may count as university credits if your school permits. Applicants outside DC are welcome, but residence in the DC metro area is preferred.

Hedgebrook’s Writer-in-Residence Program supports writers from all over the world for residency of two to three weeks. The cottage, all meals, and the entire residency experience at Hedgebrook is free to selected writers. Travel is not included, and it is the responsibility of the writer to arrange and pay for. Up to 6 writers can be in residence at a time, each housed in their own handcrafted cottage. They spend their days in solitude – writing, reading, taking walks in the woods on the property or on nearby Double Bluff beach. In the evenings, “The Gathering” is a social time for residents to connect and share over their freshly prepared meals.

Writers must be women, which is inclusive of transgender women and female-identified individuals. The Foundation residency offers three months of rent-free and utility-paid housing to people who specialize in the creative arts. Our eleven artist casitas, or guest houses, are fully furnished and provide residents with a peaceful setting in which to pursue their creative endeavors.

The Foundation accepts applications from painters, poets, sculptors, writers, playwrights, screenwriters, composers, photographers, and filmmakers of national and international origin.

Applications are reviewed by a selection committee consisting of professionals who specialize in the artistic discipline of the applicant. Numerous jurors serve on committees for each: visual arts, music composers, writers, poets, playwrights, and filmmakers. Jurors, who know nothing about the artist's demographics, score in five categories based purely on the merit of the applicant's creative work samples.

Artists in residence have no imposed expectations, quotas, or requirements during their stay on the HWF campus. The HWF’s residency program provides artists with the time and space to create, which in turn enriches the artistic community and culture locally and abroad.

The Stacy Lloyd III Fellowship for Bibliographic Study is awarded annually to one outstanding early-career scholar, working in some area related to the history, art, and culture of plants, gardens and landscapes.  This is our most prestigious award for early career researchers and scholars in the humanities.  The award includes a $10,000 individual grant and requires a 2 - 5 week stay at Oak Spring. While at OSGF, the Fellow will be able to meet with staff, explore our 700-acre landscape and our efforts in sustainable land management, and visit our rare book library that holds over 19,000 objects, including many examples of botanical art. The Fellowship is well suited for individuals working on dissertations or writing projects that require dedicated time and minimal distractions.

Established by Aritzia, a fashion retailer with an innovative global platform, this scholarship supports LGBTQIA+ people in their pursuit of higher education. Four students will receive one-time scholarships of $5,000 each, paid directly to the student’s school. Centered on Aritzia’s values, the scholarship prioritizes students who demonstrate excellence and creativity and who strive to make a positive impact on their communities.

Yaddo offers residencies to professional creative artists from all nations and backgrounds working in one or more of the following disciplines: choreography, film, literature, musical composition, painting, performance, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. Artists apply individually. Peer review is the keystone of our selection process, with different panelists each season. Residencies last from two weeks to two months and include room, board, and a studio. 

All artists whose work falls within the five disciplines we serve are encouraged to apply. Those who qualify for Yaddo residencies are either working at the professional level in their fields or are emerging artists whose work shows great professional promise. An abiding principle at Yaddo is that applications for residency are judged solely on the work's quality. Yaddo places no publication, exhibition, or performance requirements on artists in residence.
