National Scholarships and Fellowships

The American Academy of Nursing Fellowship is an honorific society and one of the most prestigious recognitions in nursing practice, research, and policy. Academy Fellows enter community with some of nursing’s most accomplished leaders in the world. The American Academy of Nursing also provides further fellowship and research opportunities to its Fellows. Applicants must be sponsored by two current Academy Fellows.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) provides various scholarships to nursing undergraduate and graduate students that award anywhere between $1,000 to $10,000. The AACN also provides resources to other unaffiliated scholarships. Awards are generally given on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, and participation in extracurricular nursing activities.

The AACN Continuing Professional Development Scholarships is a grant opportunity for nurses to fill gaps in their knowledge and enhance their career. Applicants are asked to identify a current gap in their knowledge, a learning activity that would address this gap, and the approximate cost of this activity. Only AACN members will be considered for this scholarship.

The Army Nurse Corps Association (ANCA) Scholarships honor students in an undergraduate or graduate nursing program who are serving, have served, or have immediate family who served in the US Army.

The Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions Scholarship of Excellence Program recognizes outstanding students in the health professions who have the potential for future leadership roles in health professions. Two $1,000 scholarships are awarded each year.

The Medical Student Fellowship in Radiation Oncology presented by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) introduces medical students to the field of radiation oncology. Fellows participate in collaborative research projects and gain expert advice from mentors. Programming includes an eight-week virtual summer training program and the 2027 ASTRO Annual Meeting. Fellows receive a $6,000 package throughout the one-year fellowship.

The Buckfire & Buckfire Medical Diversity Scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship for current law school students of ethnic, racial, or other minorities who have a commitment to diversity issues in their community.

The Doc Dempsey Scholarship supports students pursuing helping professions with a $500 award. Care-giving professions include but are not limited to medicine, mental health, and teaching.

The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Foundation provides various scholarships, fellowships, and grants for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a career in emergency nursing. Some awards are reserved for ENA members.

The American Heart Association Scholars Program aims to expand the future of health care by preparing today’s students to be knowledgeable and empathetic community leaders. During a 16-week program during the academic year, AHA Scholars learn from expert mentors, conduct scientific research, and participate in community engagement projects. Candidates demonstrate a commitment to community work through volunteering and aim to fight disparities in health care.

The Health and Aging Policy Fellowship is an interdisciplinary opportunity for health professionals to influence the policy that provides aging Americans with the best possible quality of life. Fellows work as legislative assistants, applying their practical clinical experience into sound health policy.

The nine-to-twelve month program offers a residential track where Fellows are placed in Washington, D.C. or at a state agency, or a non-residential track with brief placements throughout the year. Stipends range up to $70,000 for residential Fellows depending on career stage and institutional support.

The Hope for Healing Scholarships encourages exceptional students to pursue careers in addiction and mental health treatment. One undergraduate student and one graduate receive the $5,000 award annually.

The Madeline Pickett (Halbert) Cogswell Nursing Scholarship presented by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a $2,500 award granted to two students accepted or enrolled in nursing school. Applicants must be DAR members, descendants of DAR members, or be eligible for DAR membership.

In honor of the National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration in Long-Term Care (NADONA)’s previous employees and board members, the NADONA Memorial Nursing Scholarship supports undergraduate and graduate students in accredited nursing programs. This award encourages students to pursue a career in long-term care or assisted living after graduation.

The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) recognizes excellent members by providing a variety of scholarships for students at all levels in their education. Awards begin at $1,000, and most range from $1,000-$10,000.

The Education & Communication Scholarship presented by the National Dairy Shrine awards students pursuing a career in dairy industry education or communication with a $2,000 scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based on leadership experience and academic achievement.

The Nurse Corps seeks to increase health care access across the country by encouraging students to pursue nursing through the Nurse Corps Scholarship Program. This program covers full tuition costs and provides a $1,642 monthly stipend. Participants must complete a two-year service in a health care facility with a critical shortage of nurses.

The Nursing Excellence Fellowship presented by the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation (NBDF) provides a one-year grant for dedicated clinicians to conduct relating to the NBDF’s stated research priorities. Fellows receive a $15,000 grant.  Applications are reviewed on factors such as significance and innovative approach.

The A Nurse I Am Scholarship helps students pursue a career in nursing by providing a $10,000 scholarship to 10 undergraduate and graduate students in nursing programs. The scholarship also includes a gift package of medical apparel and products.

Nursing.org’s Nurses First Scholarship is a $1,000 award recognizing nursing students demonstrating high academic achievement. Candidates have a commitment to providing outstanding patient care and adapting to nursing’s evolving role in the healthcare system.

The Occupational Therapy Scholarships directory presented by Scholarships.com compiles scholarships provided by various organizations in one easy-to-navigate list. Both undergraduate and graduate scholarships are included, and these awards range from $850-$25,000.

The Essential Visionaries Fund awards undergraduate students to making a meaningful impact within K-12 school systems and healthcare fields. Recipients demonstrate leadership experience, community service, and academic excellence. Yearly scholarships range up to $10,000 and are renewable for four years.

Sunshine Behavioral Health’s Opioid Awareness Scholarship awards $500 to students in fields relating to substance abuse recovery, such as nursing and psychology. Applicants are asked to write an essay focused on the opioid epidemic in the United States.

The Tylenol Future Care Scholarship provides scholarship funds between $5,000 to $10,000 to graduate students pursuing careers in healthcare. Applicants must be a resident of the United States, Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia. Applicants must also be a graduate student or college senior who will be enrolled in a graduate program in the academic year following graduation, have at least one year of school remaining, provide proof of enrollment in a medical school or nursing or pharmacy program, have a history of community involvement or volunteer service, and participate in an essay contest.

The BD Scholarship was established by Becton, Dickinson, and Company in partnership with UNCF to provide a merit-based award to current juniors and seniors who are enrolled full-time at any UNCF member institutions, other HBCUs, or any accredited four-year college or university during the 2024-2025 academic year.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must be in biomedical science, biology, life sciences, microbiology, global health, nursing, pharmacy, or science technology. business-related field, such as marketing, finance, sales, or human resources. Preference shall be given to students who are residents of Maryland.

Office of Competitive Fellowships and Awards: Summer Fellowships

The Office of Competitive Fellowships and Awards at Towson University offers a summer fellowship each year that supports two students engaged in efforts to effect positive change in communities on- and off- campus, and that fosters TU student leaders working for the public good. Activities include community engagement, internships or research occurring over a 10-week period in the summer. Collaboration or partnership with an external organization is encouraged. Students are required to identify a faculty mentor for their project. The stipend for 10 weeks is $5,000. Faculty mentors will receive a stipend of $1,000.

Opportunities with Nonprofit Organizations

Each summer the Center for Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh (CNUP) sponsors a vibrant and diverse 10-week summer program in which selected undergraduate students from throughout the U.S. conduct neuroscience research under the guidance of individual CNUP training faculty. The Program allows qualified students to experience the challenges and rewards of intensive, hypothesis-driven laboratory research in neuroscience, and teach them the technical features of a research project. Applicants must have completed their sophomore or junior year of undergraduate training before the start of the program. A $4,000 stipend will be paid as follows.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be undergraduate students currently enrolled full-time at a U.S. college or university, have a GPA of 3.0 ("B") or higher; strong performance in science, math, and related coursework is especially important. International applicants will be required to provide official authorization for Optional Practical Training (OPT) from their home institution, prior to their arrival in Pittsburgh.

The National Hispanic Health Foundation (NHHF) established the Hispanic Health Professional Student Scholarship program for medical, nursing, dental, pharmacy, and public health students with outstanding academic records, leadership, and who are committed to serving Hispanics. NHHF’s partnership with the United Health Foundation (UHF) is a unique mentoring program where scholarship recipients are matched with a professional for a one-on-one mentoring program that focuses on their professional growth. The scholarship features awards of $5,000 annually for up to four years, as well as individual scholarship awards of $2,000 each of 40 students.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be researching in the following disciplines: Medicine: allopathic or osteopathic; Dentistry; Pharmacy; Physician Assistant; Nursing (including BSN); Master of Public Health. Applicants are not required to be Hispanic. However, an affinity for the health of Hispanic communities and an interest in participating in NHHF Scholars Alumni activities is required. Applicants must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.
