Chloë Doran | Adorned Bereavement

My work is contemporary antiquity. I combine traditional metalsmithing techniques with modern advancements in computer aided design to create a fresh interpretation of the ancient medium of jewelry. I am interested in the varied ways in which jewelry can serve as a symbolic talisman in the human processing of death. I am fascinated by the way that has developed across time and culture. Utilizing historical symbolism and traditions, in subversive combination/juxtaposition with scenes and materials from the modern world, I strive to create playful narratives in wearables and project design. Traditional concept and expression in mourning jewelry takes on a new tone when contemporary symbols and language are used to convey similar sentiments. The reverence and social convention of mourning in public has been replaced by an ever more isolated and existential experience of death and loss despite our technological connection to one another.
