Towson University offers courses and degree programs in reading education at off-campus locations through the Towson Learning Network. These programs are available at reduced costs.
UPCOMING INFORMATION SESSION:
About the Program:
The program provides four courses. The courses help prepare teachers for the Praxis
II ESOL examination, which in Maryland can lead to ESOL certification. In addition,
this Graduate Certificate provides a lead into the graduate reading program because
all of the courses are already a part of the existing graduate reading program. If
students choose this route, they would leave with reading specialist and ESOL certification.
However, they could use this Graduate Certificate to apply to other master’s degree
programs, such as our leadership or technology programs; or, they could simply complete
this Graduate Certificate to gain the background knowledge needed to work with English
learners and their families using the WIDA standards.
About the Program:
The purpose of this M.Ed. Reading Education program is to prepare future leaders in literacy education who will continue their careers as classroom teachers, reading specialists, and/or literacy coaches. The program includes social justice, DEI, and multilingual learner emphases along with advanced literacy knowledge and experiences for leading literacy programs and instruction in schools and school systems.
Completion of the program leads to advanced certification with MSDE as a Reading Specialist. Elective coursework prepares certified teachers to pursue MSDE ESOL endorsement through preparation for the Praxis II ESOL exam. Students can also receive a TU Teaching English Learners Graduate Certificate.
